Effects of Different Sowing Time on the Heading and Bolting of Cabbage Cultivars after Wintering on Cheju Island

Abstract
Field trials were carried out to investigate the effect of early late sowing on the heading and bolting of different winter cabbage cultivars during over wintering in order to produce cabbage for the period of short supply, April to May, in Cheju-do.
1. One of the best cultivar to produce in the period of short supply was $quot;Geumgye 201$quot; which was sown during the last ten days of September to harvest in April and sown in the last ten days of October to harvest in May.
2. The variety $quot;Geumgye 201$quot; sown on 25th September gave the heavier head, weighing 1.783g followed by $quot;Geumbae$quot; sown on 26th October, with a head weighing 1.467g. The variety $quot;Sagyehwak$quot; however was impossible to harvest due to non-heading.
3. Apart from variety $quot;Sagyehwak$quot; which did not head over 80% of the cultivars sown on 25th August and about 10% of the cultivars $quot;Geumbae$quot; and $quot;Geumgye 201$quot; sown on 25th September and 26th October cracked and bolted.
4. Head cracking was prolonged by 10 days with MH-30 treatment and by about 5 days when treated with B-9 or root pruning.
However all the treatment plots showed a tendency to be lightly in head weight than control plot due to chemical growth inhibitors and root pruning.
